An Historic Day

Barack Obama has been elected the 44th President of the United States of America. We hosted an election night party Tuesday, and had a spirited evening watching the returns come in. Lots of emotions, but summed up well by his persistent message of – and consistent call for – hope.

As President-Elect Obama reached the 270 electoral votes needed, fireworks went off here in our neighborhood, and downtown Seattle has crowds in the streets. It has been a remarkable, and long 22-month campaign, and there is certainly much to watch closely in the weeks until Inauguration Day (January 20th) and then, of course, with the new administration. It was reassuring and encouraging today to see such outstanding turnout at polling places here in Seattle and across the country.

Senator McCain gave a generous and classy concession speech tonight, and President-Elect Obama gave an eloquent victory speech from Chicago.

Results from a number of other races and ballot initiatives here in Washington State continue to come in.

I need to turn off the election coverage and go to bed now.

What a night.
